Decades Daily Fashion Fact: February 2

DECADES DAILY FASHION FACT: FEBRUARY 1

One of our favorite fashion facts to follow: Raise your hand if you know the origin of the infamous Hermès Birkin Bag. For those of you crouching in the back of the class, here's a little Birkin tidbit to keep you in the know.

In the 1980s, Jane Birkin was seated on a plane next to Jean-Louis Dumas, Hermès chief executive. The chanteuse placed her infamous straw basket above her in the overhead compartment and of course, with no top closure, all of her goodies and flight essentials came tumbling down and out of the basket.

As she scrambled to pick up her things, she noted to Dumas that she had yet to find a good weekender bag and didn't want to abandon her beloved basket as she adored it's shape. Dumas has the Birkin created just for her, based an earlier design, to retain it's bucket-like shape.

And there you have it. The birth of the Birkin. If course, you can keep it in pristine condition and preserve its worth, but there's something we quite like about the way the modern Jane carries hers: strewn with ribbons, bangles and beads. Quite the épitomé of haute hippie, no?

And you if would like to have you very own Birkin, why not this one for a very reasonable price!!

Hermes Birkin 40cm in navy alligator with palladium hardware, 2010. SOLD
